Aerial Survey of the Cow Castle hillfort

Introduction

The Cow Castle hillfort in Exmoor stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient human activity within this rugged landscape. Using drone photogrammetry, I have digitally recorded this Iron Age hillfort to create a detailed map, documenting its features and exploring its historical significance. This map serves as a valuable base for further analysis, aiding in the study of the site’s landscape, structure, and past usage.

Site Context

Cow Castle, a prominent Iron Age hillfort, is nestled within the scenic River Barle valley. Surrounded by moorland, it represents a strategic location, likely chosen for defensive purposes. Its historical importance and its integration into Exmoor’s landscape make it an intriguing subject for digital documentation.

Method

The photogrammetry process involved capturing many overlapping images to create an accurate 3D model of the site and then use the 3D data as a base for a DEM and Orthographic Map. To create the photographs, I have flown a DJI mini 3 pro over the site. To avoid any disturbance to wildlife and visitors the drone has been flown high which unfortunately resulted in a lower resolution of the results. The topographic projection and DTM created from this 3D data can then be enhanced in GIS to reveal more details and use it as a base for further analysis.

Conclusion

Digital mapping through photogrammetry enables us to preserve and study sites like the Cow Castle in greater detail than ever before. This model not only aids research but also makes the site accessible to a broader audience, fostering appreciation for Exmoor’s cultural heritage.
