This study presents an automated approach to object masking in urban photogrammetry. Leveraging a pre-trained Mask R-CNN model within a Python framework, the methodology effectively removes transient objects such as vehicles and pedestrians, thereby enhancing feature matching and 3D reconstruction accuracy in complex urban environments.
The underground passages of Exeter are a unique historical network beneath the city. This project focuses on scanning key surface connections, including the Heritage Centre and Roman Gate, to digitally integrate these subterranean spaces with the modern streetscape. Using photogrammetry, detailed 3D models are created to enhance spatial understanding and support historical research.
The Cow Castle hillfort in Exmoor has been digitally recorded using drone photogrammetry to create a detailed 3D map. This dataset supports further analysis of the site’s landscape, structure, and historical significance, offering valuable insights into its defensive role within the River Barle valley.
The Halliggye Fogou in Cornwall served as a test case for photogrammetric recording in low-light, confined spaces. This project, conducted during a personal visit, highlights the challenges of artificial lighting, equipment limitations, and texture artefacts, contributing to improved workflows for similar archaeological sites.
The South Coaster shipwreck, located near Starcross, has been documented through initial drone surveys. Despite challenges with water reflections and low sun angle, the collected data offers valuable insights into the wreck’s structure. This project will continue with enhanced data capture under improved conditions for more detailed mapping and modelling.
